Make Your PC Wake From Sleep Automatically

A lot of people these days are becoming more aware of the energy savings to be had by shutting down unused equipment when it’s not in use. And while it’s no problem to shut off the TV and the end of the evening a lot of people have trouble doing the same for the PC. This is mainly because it’s nice to have all your work on your computer right there where you left it when you return in the morning. Of course, this is what “sleep” mode is for – you can save energy without losing your place.

But wouldn’t it be nice if your computer knew when to wake up for you? Well, it can! Using the Task Scheduler (In Vista: Control Panel\System and Maintenance\Administrative Tools\Task Scheduler), you can make your PC wake up at the designated time you want just by having it run a simple task – like say, launching then closing the command prompt window.

For example:

Schedule a task that executes the command cmd.exe with command line arguments [/c “exit”] (without the []) and make sure to set the ‘Wake computer up to execute this task’ in the power options. Schedule the task for when you want your computer to wake up and you will never have to wait on it again.

Live Mesh v.s. MobileMe : Tech. Showdown!

The computing industry that as we know today is changing very fast into one in which everything we need can be accessed online. Microsoft is onboard with this new computing paradigm popularly known as “Cloud Computing” which folks at Redmond more like to call it as “Software + Services”.

For the past several years, Microsoft founder Bill Gates has always emphasized in his various keynotes and speeches on how important a role a Windows PC plays as the center of everyone’s digital life. Sure people have moved beyond the PC with connected devices, and has engage with others online, but the PC was always at the center. When you think about it, putting a PC in the center of our lives.. it makes a lot of sense … but the trend now is changing, people now are more looking for these portable form factors that utilize Internet that work online in ways that, as it turns out, don’t actually require Windows or traditional PCs.

Now this to me is a very important time for Microsoft, the time when Bill Gates and some of other oldies reign ends at Microsoft. While these people did a lot for us to change about how we perceive computers today and I have tremendous respect for them but now I also think that there is a need for a change, a change that can change Microsoft’s outlook(not Office Outlook) on how they work today.

Microsoft more recently turned towards the outside talent and promoted them to its executive ranks, Ray Ozzie being one of them who filled the big boots of Bill Gates last year as Chief Software Architect with ease. His appointment as CSA Microsoft to me has been one of the best decisions Microsoft took in the period of like say last few years. He’s the real man behind Windows Live and many of the new S+S applications which we are now seeing. This is the guy who has been involved with some of the major computing trends. Its now finally after a period of couple of years that we’re seeing the positive effects of this new blood at Microsoft.

Ozzie is now in charge of setting the future direction for the world’s largest software maker and unlike his predecessor, he has little interest in milking past successes. He is the guy behind Microsoft’s cloud computing efforts and the products and services he’s working on have little do with Windows, Office, or Server. He knows that the world is moving on and he’s trying to move Microsoft with the same pace to this new world. Some people there will go willingly. others will go screaming, while some may simply retire, unable to handle the future Microsoft. Regardless, change is happening and its clearly visible now..

So the result of all this is that you see the birth of Live Mesh. Microsoft’s Software + Services initiative promotes the best of the old (what Microsoft does best) with the best of the new (what Microsoft will do increasingly more frequently in the future).

But at this years WWDC, Apple unveiled a service that allows users to wirelessly sync and access information across multiple devices and has yet again beaten Microsoft in first releasing a complete product out the door of which Microsoft already showcased a Tech. Preview in May. Apple announced replacement to their .Mac in the form of MobileMe, a service which syncs data between PCs, Macs, iPhone & iPod Touch. The service works with Microsoft Outlook on a PC. Mail, Address Book, and iCal on a Mac and Mail, Contacts, and Calendar on the iPhone or iPod Touch. It allows us to access and manage our email, contacts, calendar, photos, and files at me.com.

Here is what Mary-Jo has to say about this:

Apple’s introduction of the successor to .Mac — a k a, MobileMe — raises the question as to what’s taking Microsoft so long to roll out Live Mesh.
There aren’t a whole lot of details yet available on MobileMe, other than that it will allow cloud-based synchronization of data and devices. (And will make use of Microsoft’s ActiveSync technology, which Apple licensed from Microsoft in order to bring push e-mail to the iPhone, creating its “Exchange for the rest of us.”)

While I haven’t tried MobileMe as yet primarily because it isnt available until July 11, I have played quite a lot with Live Mesh ever since it was released to a small group of testers in May and even though its is still in early development phase has already become a central part of my daily computing life.

Lets look at what these two services offer and how do they compare against each other?

First up lets see what Live Mesh offers?

You dont often see Microsoft getting credit for something they introduce first in the market. Live Mesh truly is a game changer for Microsoft as far as their online services are concerned and its in a league of its own. It is currently only open to a small group of private testers. It offers free 5GB cloud storage to synchronize and store data in the cloud. The best thing about Live Mesh is that it integrates extremely well into Windows shell which allows us to synchronize our files and folders between various devices but the catch is that it also has an option which keeps the file in cloud making it available whenever and wherever you want. The service also promises to support Mac’s and Windows Mobile (iPhone anyone?) phones to sync files within multiple platforms. Remote Desktop is also a great addition that enables us to remotely access our computers within our Mesh network from anywhere around the world. Live Mesh also includes a cloud storage component, called Live Desktop. It is an online service that allows synchronized folders to be accessible via a website and it looks extremely similar to Windows Explorer found in Windows OS. One of the bigger benefits of Live Mesh would be when later this year, an API would be release which would allow us to build app’s that would run online under Live Desktop environment.

All an all, Live Mesh works great for a service which is currently only available as a technology preview and so I have great expectations from this promising service which will be released later this year.

Now lets see what MobileMe has to offer?

MobileMe gives you access to 20GB of space in the cloud for a fee of $99/year. You can upload photos or documents. You can share your calendar across multiple platforms. You also get email service which can be used with Microsoft Outlook.

So MobileMe is basically a simple way to keep everything up to date. You can have the same data everywhere i.e. your computer, web and your phone and is always up to date. Apple’s idea behind this is that when something changes in one place, it will automatically change in all of the others. In essence, it will “push” the changes across your devices.

Besides all this, MobileMe also offers web versions to the native client applications found in Mac like iCal, iLife and Mail. This is where the main difference lies between Live Mesh and MobileMe. MobileMe offers beautiful looking web versions of the native applications in Mac whereas on the other hand Live Mesh offers synchronization with remote computing and Live desktop capabilities. It is also worthy to note that Microsoft already offers web based Mail and Calendar through their Windows Live platform but ofcoarse they dont collaborate or work as well as what Apple showcased at this years WWDC.

MobileMe stores all your email, contacts, and calendars on an online server - or “cloud” - and pushes them down to your iPhone, iPod touch, Mac, and PC. When you make a change on one device, the cloud updates the others. Push happens automatically, instantly, and continuously. You don’t have to wait for it or remember to do anything - such as docking your iPhone and syncing manually - to stay up to date.
Do everything you need to do on every device you own. MobileMe works with Mail, Address Book, and iCal on a Mac; Microsoft Outlook on a PC with Windows XP or Vista; and the built-in applications on your iPhone or iPod touch.
Check your email, change your calendar, edit your contacts, and more at me.com. Accessible anywhere, me.com is an ad-free suite of web applications — Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Gallery, and iDisk — that are elegant and easy to use. You can drag and drop, click and drag, use keyboard shortcuts, and even switch between applications with a single click. Me.com is such a great web experience, it seems as if you’re using desktop software.

This subscription-based service will be available on July 11. It’s priced at $99 per year with 20 GB of storage.

Both the services differ from each other in many areas as stated above but they do have same idea behind i.e. to synchronize user data so that they dont have to worry about updating multiple devices all the time.

In my opinion Live Mesh has more potential because the platform is open for others to develop on Live Desktop once the API is released later this year.

Live Maps updated just in time for 2008 summer Olympics in Beijing

Live Maps team has updated maps of Beijing just in time for the upcoming summer Olympic games at Beijing.

Too bad they didnt add support for Birds Eye View which in my opinion is the best feature of Live Maps and the one which really differentiate it from Google Earth/Maps.

So if you are planning to go to Beijing for this years Olympics, make sure you take a portable device such as Windows Mobile to keep you up to date with all the cool site seeing and live traffic updates with the help of Live Search Maps on one of the most busiest city I have ever been to.

At first, I was very excited as I have been waiting for it for so long but once I tried it, I immediately wanted to uninstall it. Why? I had this impression from initial screenshots on the site that 360desktop would be about getting full 3d control over your desktop in which you could move the desktop in all directions smoothly with some cool effects. but it wasnt the case, all 360desktop does is that it pointlessly scrolls your desktop horizontally, moreover you cant even set your own wallpaper. In beta, we have only 2 wallpapers to choose from which kind of sucks in my opinion.

Verdict:
360desktop has disappointed me. It might be useful for those with small monitors who want more horizontal space but does an average Joe really need horizontal space in this age when widescreen monitors are so common? Plus the inability to customize the desktop with a wallpaper of our choice doesnt make it worth it.

Getting started with SQL Server Data Services

A couple of days ago, I received a mail from Microsoft Connect which confirmed me as a private tester for Microsoft SQL Server Data Services. While I am still exploring this new service, I just thought of guiding all those interested in this service in order to help you get started with SQL Server Data Services a.k.a SSDS but first up, what is SSDS?

At this years MIX, Microsoft unveiled SQL Server Data Services as a direct competitor to Amazon SimpleDB. SQL Server Data Services is a web-facing utility-based service designed for businesses and developers that need scalable, highly available, secure and easily programmable on-demand data storage with robust database query capabilities. The platform is built upon existing Microsoft SQL Server relational database technologies. So basically it’s a cloud-based repository service that will offer APIs that enable storage in the cloud.

Xbox 360 Getting a 3D Dashboard Make-Over?

The rumored Xbox 360 Spring Update might not have hit yet, but we know something big is in the works for the console's dashboard.

How big? Well besides the gi-normous list of rumored updates we posted about back in May we're now hearing from a number of sources that the Live dashboard is going to be getting a second interface option, one that will use the yet-to-be announced motion controller to navigate.

This new user interface, we've been told, will recreate the increasingly cluttered dashboard "blade" system in a 3D environment that will be something more akin to the Minority Report than a filing cabinet. The motion controls will allow users to sort of slide through the different levels of this floating menu system.

Sounds like a fantastic idea, if it can be implemented correctly.

Review: YouTube application in HTC Touch Diamond

Videos on YouTube are like hapiness and money ("if you can't buy hapiness, then you don't know where to shop"): you can find anything on YouTube and if you can't find it, then you don't know how to search.
Some people mention, that tilt sensor of HTC Touch Diamond is a feature that can sway many people to buy this phone, but another amazing advancement of this phone, is YouTube stand-alone application that is included in HTC Touch Diamond and that offers even high-quality watching meaning the image sharper than in iPhone because it uses full 640x480 pixels (and iPhone has only 320x480 pixels = 2 times less):

Once you open the YouTube application you see the following welcome screen (we publish screen shots here one-to-one, i.e. in original resolution as they appear in HTC Touch Diamond):

However we don't recommend trying out videos on the welcome screen as many of them are spoofs and does not include topics that they claim to cover.
What we can recommend is searching for author of given video:

... or searching for some specific topic:

In any case we recommend using high resolution in settings:

... but obviously if you are on cellular network and not WiFi and you must see something quickly, then lower resolution ("fast download") is also OK.
In case you give your phone to somebody to use, don't forget to clear history of your YouTube watching in order to avoid embarassment:

You can also bookmark some videos in case you would like to watch them again for some reason or if you would like to show them off to somebody.

Another nice touch of this YouTube application is ability to send YouTube videos over MMS or email - just by tapping on the email icon.
By tapping on "i" icon on the right side of the list of videos (in search box, history or favorites) user can get see additional info about given video including longer textual descriptions, some "related videos" and some "more from the same author" vidoes.
Improvement suggestions for HTC for this YouTube application (although we are not sure whether they are more towards Google/YouTube than HTC):

search results when one enters name of the author to the search box should be sorted in chronological order, i.e. recently uploaded on the top
some caching mechanism would be useful, i.e. this YouTube application should not connect to the Internet automatically on the start-up and users should be able to watch vidoes from the cache - without connection to the Internet
users should be able to tap on the icon of the author to see all vidoes of given author and it should be possible to have "more..." link near "related videos" and "more videos fromt he same author"

Conclusion: YouTube application of HTC Touch Diamond is much better than m.youtube.com (mobile version of YouTube) because it offers ability to view YouTube videos in a much more comfortable way and with high resolution that takes full advantage of the VGA display of HTC Touch Diamond. In other words: YouTube video watching on HTC Touch Diamond offers higher quality of videos than iPhone. Obviously the number of features is still not the same as in the case of YouTube usage on a desktop computer, but with few improvements (see list of suggestions below) this application could be perfect.
All in all HTC has taken a very good, excellent, decision to include YouTube application in HTC Touch Diamond! Many people are sitting for hours and doing nothing but just watching videos on YouTube. One can find on YouTube a lot of material on all topics, so having this application makes a huge difference!

Silverlight based MSN Toolbar gets updated

Last week I reviewed MSN Toolbar which is built using Silverlight technology. Today morning I noticed a slight change in the toolbar as it got updated automatically. The toolbar now features local weather forecast which in my opinion is a very nice touch and adds more value to the toolbar. The Windows Live search portion has also been updated. Previously we could only search for Web, Images, Video, News, Maps & Local from the toolbar but now more options have been added so now we can also search for Products, QnA and xRank.

You can see your local weather forecast on the right corner of the toolbar.

Clicking on weather pops up a nice looking window which shows the forecast in detail.

The new MSN Toolbar version is 3.0.270.0 and the Application version is 3.0.0426.0.

Bill Gates - The End of an Era

We have already covered about the legacy of Bill Gates here but I just thought I should add something about the man who I idolized for the larger part of my not so long life.

So here’s is to the man who changed the way I interact with computers!

For many, Bill Gates and his company Microsoft would more be remembered for the evil-doings and monopolization which led to their domination on desktop PCs but for me Bill Gates is a business man in a true sense of word. He truly knew the art of doing business. He broadened the company’s range of products, and then pushed it so aggressively that it led to the the domination and success of his products. Bill Gates predicted “a computer in every home and on every desk”….and today its indeed in every home & on every desk and over 90% of those run Windows. So for me Gates will be remembered as one of the best-known business men and one of the best entrepreneurs of the personal computer revolution.

And Now June 27, 2008 marks the End of an Era that was as Bill Gates has transitioned out of day-to-day role in the company which he co-founded with his friends Paul Allen & Steve Ballmer to spend more time on his work at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. But Gates will still remain Microsoft’s chairman and will be involved in select projects based on direction from Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer and the leadership team. Microsoft will continue to be led by a deep leadership team, led by CEO Steve Ballmer, Chief Research and Strategy Officer Craig Mundie and Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie. With guys like Ray Ozzie at helm, Microsoft to me is in safe hands!

Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V has RTM'ed

Today, Microsoft reaches a significant milestone for customers and partners with the release of Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V, the hypervisor-based virtualization feature included in select versions of Windows Server 2008. Those who have already deployed the x64 versions of Windows Server 2008 can receive Hyper-V from Windows Update beginning July 8, while new customers and partners can download Hyper-V later today (12:00 pm PT). The Windows Virtualization team will be counting down the days to download from Windows Update, so be sure to visit the Windows Virtualization Team blog to see daily spotlights on specific features and benefits of Hyper-V technology, as well as to read about customer stories and see postings from guests.

Since the beta release of Hyper-V in February, more than 250 customers have participated in Hyper-V’s early adoption program. Microsoft’s own deployment and results with Hyper-V is showcased today in Rob Emanuel’s guest blog and video on the Windows Server Division blog, specifically on customers using Hyper-V and partner benefits, visit the Microsoft PressPass site.

Silverlight based MSN Toolbar for IE

Do you use toolbar with your web browser?

Toolbars for me are the thing of the past. Gone are the days when I used to try toolbars from Google, Microsoft, Yahoo or AOL to be able to have features such as tabbed browsing, searching from the browser etc because back then such features were not a standard part of any of the available web browsers. Later Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and likes started pushing these toolbar just to get more market share in search as their respective search engines were built into the toolbars. This resulted in toolbars getting bloated with unnecessary features which halted our web experience. This was the time when I stopped using toolbars

Then came Opera and Firefox who in their newer versions of browsers added tabbed browsing, built-in search as the standard feature of their web browser. Microsoft later too added these features as a standard in Internet Explorer 7.

All this changed when a few months ago I was invited by Microsoft Connect to test out their upcoming Silverlight based toolbar. I tried a couple of builds of this toolbar and ever since then I have been using this toolbar and its now a part of my daily web browsing experience.

Last month MSN \ Windows Live team released the final bits of this toolbar. Its supported by both Silverlight 1.0 and Silverlight 2.0 Beta 2 however it will not run on Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1. Based on Silverlight technology, the toolbar feature not only sleek & sexy look but its also very rich when it comes down to features. The toolbar allows us to search & browse the entire MSN categories from the browser without going to the msn.com site.

On the left we have a Live Search textbox to search the web(pretty useless for me because I rarely use Live Search but its a neat feature nonetheless). On the right we have 3 buttons; one for flip, next one for settings and the last one for help. The flip button flips(animated ofcoarse) the MSN category options into Live options.

Clicking on Windows Live brings out(animated) a sub menu for running Windows Live apps installed on the system.

Search box works very well. As soon as you search for anything, the MSN categories side flips into animation and transforms into options from Windows Live to assist in search as shown in the image above.

Color chooser is a nice touch and is now becoming almost a standard in all of the Windows Live apps. As expected, it allows us to colorize the entire toolbar into a color of our choice!

Being based on Silverlight techonology, the entire toolbar looks flashy and has got smooth animations on almost all mouse clicks.

Overall its a nice toolbar and the best looking out there and most importantly its light and doesnt slow down the web experience. I wish it had the option to change the search provider from Live to Google but oo.. well..

I’ll recommend you all to try it atleast once. Head over to toolbar.msn.com to download it!

The IE team at Redmond HQ of Microsoft has send a fancy little cake to Mozilla’s Montain View HQ as a good gesture to join in the celebration of the release of Firefox 3.

Well what can I say about this? Didnt expect this coming from Microsoft. I was very surprised when I got to know that IE team also sent in a cake when Firefox 2.0 was launched.

If this wasnt enough, Mozilla revealed today that the Firefox team kept the IE logo piece frozen since then!

Kudos to Microsoft & IE team for showing such a good gesture!

Live Mesh gets an update

LiveSide & Steve Clayton has reported that Microsoft has silently updated their Live Mesh client-side application. The newer version is 0.9.2815.17 as opposed to version 0.9.2815.12

Live Mesh team is yet to publish any change log about the changes that this new update brings to the table but Scott of LiveSide has found out that after Live Mesh update is installed, Vista users are now no longer required to turn on the UAC for Live Mesh to work.
You can update your Live Mesh client app by right clicking on the Live Mesh tray icon and click on ‘Update Live Mesh’.

HTC Windows Mobile 7 phone by Q1 2009

This date is earlier than we expected but still not this year as some "manufacturer" (in fact: re-seller of models designed and made in Taiwan and China) claimed. Since HTC is biggest manufacturer of Windows Mobile phones with market share of over 80%, so it is interesting to see what HTC says about Windows Mobile 7:

At the HTC Touch Diamond launch in South Africa, I had the opportunity to have a little chat with Kevin Chen, General Manager of HTC for MEA and CIS. Besides having an in-depth explanation on the innovations that the Touch Diamond brings, Chen told me that HTC is planning to unveil a device with Google Android Operating System by Q4 of this year, and a Windows Mobile 7 by Q1 of next year, atleast that’s what’s on the planned release schedule from HTC.

Commentary: the launch date of HTC's first phone powered by Google Android is nothing new because it was announced in many places that it is by the end of this year, however it is interesting to see that Kevin Chen from HTC - obviously a higher manager sent from Taiwan to manage regional sales - is unveiling HTC's roadmap for Windows Mobile 7. The statement however looks very optimistic as from our previous information the release date of the first Windows Mobile 7 phones would be summer 2009. It may be that in February 2009, during Mobile World Congress 2009, Microsoft will unveil Windows Mobile 7 officially for the first time and it is possible that HTC immediately at the same time will announce their first phone powered by it... or maybe even HTC will launch this device immediately, not just announce it. All in all it looks like Windows Mobile 7 will come out earlier than expected: Q1/2009 instead of Q3/2009...

New Features for IT Pros in Internet Explorer 8

At this week's Tech Ed IT Pro 2008 in Orlando, IE Team announced some of the enhancements that they're making in Internet Explorer 8 to help IT Professionals deploy and manage IE8 within their organization.

Here is a quick run down to all the support that IE 8 is going to offer for IT Professionals:

Slipstream Support in Internet Explorer 8

Deploying Internet Explorer 7 as part of Windows XP installation was v.hard and troublesome. Many IT Pros wanted to update their Windows XP images to contain IE7 by default, so IE7 gets installed as part of the OS install. To do that the IT Pros needed to boot their existing images of Windows XP, install IE7 and then recapture the image. This process roughly used to took about 2 hours per image.

With Internet Explorer 8 and Windows Vista this isn't the case anymore! as they will allow us to “Slipstream” Internet Explorer 8 into a Vista image so that when you deploy Vista it already contains Internet Explorer 8. Slipstream IE8 will only take about 10-15 minute per image.

Application Compatibility and Internet Explorer 8

Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) will help IT Pros detect and resolve potential issues between IE8 and internal applications and web sites. Further more Group Policy settings will help control those settings that most impact compatibility.

Updates to Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK)

The Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) will enable IT Pros to customize IE for their company’s needs. IEAK was previously available with IE 6 & IE 7. But in IE8, IEAK is getting a facelift and some enhancements has been added to improve the performance of IEAK. IEAK8 will support custom IE8 builds for new platforms: Vista and Windows Server 2008 and new IE8 features like Activities and Web Slices.

All of the above mentioned features will be included when IE 8 Beta 2 is released sometime in August.

SQL Server 2008 RC 0 released to TechNet & MSDN

Microsoft made available to select testers on June 5 the near-final Release Candidate (RC) 0 of SQL Server 2008.

As of Friday, Microsoft had released the latest test build of its database to TechNet Plus and Microsoft Developer Network(MSDN) subscribers only. The new build wasn’t on the private Connect test site. (Not sure if availability has changed since then.)

Microsoft officially “launched” SQL Server 2008 in February, alongside Visual Studio 2008 and Windows Server 2008. Earlier this year, Microsoft officials said they were planning to deliver SQL Server 2008 by mid-2008. Company officials last week reiterated Microsoft’s more recent guidance: The company is planning to deliver the final build of SQL Server 2008 in the third calendar quarter of 2008.

All of the versions of SQL Server 2008 — Developer, Enterprise, Standard, Web and Workgroup — are part of the latest RC 0 download.

Windows Live Wave 3.0 - the end of Live Orb?

With Live Wave 1.0 & Live Wave 2.0 well behind us, Windows Live team at Microsoft has been working on the next version of its online services (Windows Live Wave 3) for quite a while now and it is said to carry a new theme for header UI. While Live Wave 2 Suite brought us an All-in-one online installer which included Windows Live Messenger 8.5, Mail, Writer and Photo Gallery, it also introduced a new theme for header UI for all the Windows Live services that actually marked the end of Flair (version 1.0 UI for Windows Live).

LiveSide is reporting about the new header that will be released when Windows Live Wave 3 launches. This new header while in many ways looks much better & cooler than the current one also marks the end of Live Orb. Orb has become a standard symbol in many of Microsoft services and applications. Introduced first with Windows Vista (replacing the Start button) and Office 2007 (replacing the File menu), Orb is basically a trademark button that provides sub menu options. Rumor has it that even Internet Explorer 8 when released will feature an Orb.

Here is a quick run-down to the history of Window Live UI’s:

Flair (Live 1.0)

Flair or Blue Vapor was the first UI for Windows Live. my.live.com and Windows Live Favorites still uses this interface.

Live 2.0

Windows Live Wave 2 introduced a new theme for Windows Live services. This theme replaced the Flair which was part of Live 1.0

Live 3.0

Windows Live Wave 3 will feature a new theme UI for Live header. This theme has got some resemblance to the Zune theme and it looks very cool. However one thing which it really misses is the Windows Live Orb which as shown in the image below has been replaced by a simple Windows Live logo.

Changes include (from LiveSide):

- No orb: Windows Live is seemingly following the MSN approach, providing links to the key services and then a drop down menu with the other services on offer. This should make it easier for users to discover the less main-stream services.
- Customisable background: Users can choose from a range of standard backgrounds to appear across the Windows Live sites, but we’re also hearing that users can use a custom background too.
- Search: The box is less intrusive, blending in with the background. Also of note is the removal of the ugly green button, which goes a long way to making this design much more aesthetically pleasing.
- No product names: In an attempt to seemingly clean up the branding issues once and for all, Microsoft is making the product names less obvious. Instead products are referred to by a basic, self-explanatory name, Files instead of Skydrive, for example. That’s not to say the product names are necessarily being cut, but this simplification is a move which is long overdue.

In my opinion Live Orb should be included simply because it is now a trademark symbol for pretty much all the flag ship services (Windows Live) and applications (Windows Vista, Windows Media Center, Office 2007, Internet Explorer 8(Rumor) ) of Microsoft. Plus it also brings some sort of uniformity & consistency between all the services & applications of Microsoft and gives them all an overall impression that they belong to one hut.

Silverlight 2 Beta 2, Expression Blend 2.5 June Preview Released

Silverlight 2 Beta2 was released today. You can download both Silverlight 2 Beta2 and the Visual Studio and Expression Blend tools support to target it here.

Beta2 adds a lot of new features (more details below), but is still a 4.6 MB download that takes less than 10 seconds to install on a machine. It does not require the .NET Framework or any other software to be installed for it to work, and all features work cross-browser on both Mac and Windows machines. These features will also be supported on Linux via the Moonlight 2 release.

Silverlight 2 Beta2 supports a go-live license that allows you to start using and deploying Silverlight 2 for commercial applications. There will be some API changes between Beta2 and the final release, so you should expect that applications you write with Beta2 will need to make some updates when the final release comes out. But we think that these changes will be straight-forward and relatively easy, and that you can begin planning and starting commercial projects now.

You can build Silverlight Beta2 applications using the VS 2008 Tools for Silverlight and Expression Blend 2.5 June Preview downloads. You can download both of them here. The VS 2008 Tools for Silverlight download works with both VS 2008 and the recent VS 2008 SP1 beta release.

More Built-in Controls

In Beta 1 only a few controls were included with the core Silverlight setup. Most common controls (including Button, ListBox, Slider, etc) were shipped within separate assemblies that you had to bundle with your applications (which increased the app download size). Beta 2 now installs 30+ of the most common controls as part of the core Silverlight 2 download. This means that you can now build Silverlight 2 applications that use core controls that are as small as 3kb in size - making Silverlight application downloads small and startup time fast.

In addition to the core controls included with the base Silverlight 2 setup, we are also this week shipping additional higher-level controls that are implemented in separate assemblies that you can then reference and include with your applications. This includes controls like DataGrid (more details on its new Beta2 features below), Calendar (now with multi-day selection and blackout date support in Beta2), and a ...

Microsoft Videos BETA launched: Another attempt to push Silverlight?

Microsoft Videos lets us explore and watch Microsoft’s collection of online video. The whole experience is built using Microsoft Silverlight platform. The site is a collection of all types of Microsoft videos which includes demos, advertisements, tutorials, press releases, Microsoft Research videos etc. We can scan through Quick Picks for the latest videos, or enter a search for a particular video and we can also choose from one of the given Video Categories.

I personally liked the site. It has got some useful demo videos especially for Expression Studio and I being a developer loved it as it isnt quite easy to find free demo videos for Microsoft Expression suite on the Internet.

Though I also think that the site wont really appeal the average Joe and it seems like the only purpose of Microsoft behind this website is to push their Silverlight technology more into main stream.
